Jo Wood describes herself as an ‘organic nut’ and with her keen promotion of Fair Trade and organic living she is the perfect ambassador for People Tree.

Jo and Safia visit garment worker in the slums of Dhaka
Safia Minney, founder of People Tree, took Jo with her to Bangladesh to see the benefits of Fair Trade fashion for herself. They also visited the slums of Begunbari in Dhaka’s capital, to meet garment factory workers, where the collections were being handmade. Jo Wood talked with the artisans about their experience with People Tree and what difference Fair Trade makes to their lives.
Jo visited the slums of Dhaka to see the poor conditions and immense poverty that many garment workers are forced to live in. This was in stark contrast to the quality of life enjoyed by the people at Swallows, our producer group in Bangladesh.

On reflection of her trip, Jo said; “I’m delighted to be supporting the People Tree Foundation and People Tree as they lead the way in showing how Fair Trade is so successful in enriching local communities. Fashion can be stylish, as can Fair Trade and environmental issues. So, think twice, be nice and buy Fair Trade.”
It was certainly a trip of mixed emotions, which is featured in the June issue of Marie Claire. You can also watch behind the scenes footage of Jo’s trip to both Swallows and the slums of Dhaka.
