International Women’s Day 2010

On Monday, 8 March 2010, People Tree celebrated International Women’s Day. Started in 1909,  it was created to celebrate Women’s Rights worldwide.

It’s also a day when I wake up thinking about the hundreds of women I know who work for People Tree, how they juggle childcare, work and community life, just like many of us do, often without a man at their side. Fair Trade links us all together in the pursuit of something better.

PS   International Women’s Day reminded me of my girlfriends in London too!  I called them and asked them if they’d like to celebrate it by choosing a few of their favourite pieces from our new Spring Summer 2010 collection.  Jane Shepherdson, the fabulous CEO of Whistles, gave her choices here

This very sad story reminded me that we have to continue to fight to campaign for fair working practices through sustainable fashion…

At least 21 workers died and 50 were hurt when a fire swept through a Bangladeshi factory making clothes for budget retailer H&M and other firms as they worked at night to fulfil orders…
