The model Mia Tazawa tells us about what she likes about People Tree and what she thinks governments need to do support Fair Trade…

What do you do to protect the environment and promote human rights?

I’m doing what I can.  Like not using disposable chopsticks or carrying the same water bottle when I go out.  I recycle a lot too and use environmentally friendly washing powder.

What do you like about People Tree?

People Tree shares the background of how goods are made, a process that has been hidden so far. The process of making People Tree’s products involves good environmental and social practice.  I think it’s wonderful to know where everything comes from, from the materials to how its made.  It was through People Tree that I realized for the first time that I’d known nothing about what I bought and consumed.

Do young people share your concern for social or environmental issues?

They may not show much concern until they reach a certain age, it took me a while! (laughs) I grew up in Tokyo surrounded by shops and anything I wanted.  Then I started surfing three years ago, I realized how polluted the sea is, and the surrounding natural environment.  Young people nowadays stay at home more than I used to and hardly go out and experience nature.  I think if those young people spend more time in a natural environment, not withdrawing into their world, their thinking would change.

What needs to change now?

The Japanese government should be more active in supporting Fair Trade, like cutting VAT on Fair Trade products.  The public can do a lot to help disadvantaged people though Fair Trade but the government needs to put money into public awareness and developmental assistance too.  For my part I’ll continue to promote environmental awareness and Fair Trade… it’s a way of repaying nature for all its gifts to me – air, water, food.  Humans cannot make nature more beautiful…
